Revolutionizing Periodontal Care: "Blue Radical P-01" and "Perimil" App Launch

The dental healthcare industry is on the brink of a major transformation with the introduction of the world's first periodontal treatment device, "Blue Radical P-01," and the patient behavior modification app, "Perimil." This innovative duo is set to tackle the pervasive issue of periodontal disease, which affects 80% of adults in Japan, with an estimated 11 million suffering from periodontal pockets of 6mm or more. Addressing this widespread health concern requires a new approach, one that combines cutting-edge technology with behavioral science to effect real change in patient health outcomes.

Understanding the Challenge

Despite Japan's extensive dental infrastructure, with over 68,000 dental clinics, periodontal disease remains a significant challenge. The traditional model of dental care, focused on treatment and maintenance within the clinic, has limitations, especially when it comes to preventing the neglect that often precedes periodontal disease.

Innovative Solutions from Tohoku University

To address this, a research team led by Taro Kanno at Tohoku University has spent 17 years developing a comprehensive periodontal therapy. This new approach, dubbed "NEW DESIGNED PERIODONTAL THERAPY," aims to not only treat the symptoms of periodontal disease but also to fundamentally change patient behavior towards oral healthcare.

Introducing "Blue Radical P-01"

"Blue Radical P-01" represents a groundbreaking non-surgical treatment option for severe periodontal disease, utilizing a combination of ultrasonic vibration and radical sterilization. It's the first periodontal treatment device to receive medical device certification from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for its specific purpose in periodontal treatment, inflammation, and sterilization within periodontal pockets. The device operates through a novel mechanism of action, applying 3% hydrogen peroxide water and 405nm blue laser irradiation to achieve radical sterilization—a technique proven to kill 99.99% of oral bacteria causing periodontal disease without harming the human body.

Perimil: A Companion App for Behavioral Change

Complementing the physical treatment, "Perimil" serves as a digital tool to encourage patients to maintain interest in their oral health. The app enables patients to monitor their treatment progress, understand their individual risk levels through an easy-to-understand visual interface, and receive personalized guidance on oral hygiene practices. This push towards daily monitoring and communication between dental clinics and patients marks a significant shift towards proactive healthcare management.

Shifting Paradigms in Dental Healthcare

Together, "Blue Radical P-01" and "Perimil" embody a holistic approach to periodontal care, addressing both the physical and behavioral aspects of the disease. By fostering an environment where patients are actively engaged in their treatment and prevention strategies, these innovations have the potential to greatly reduce the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease, paving the way for a healthier society that starts from the mouth.

The Future of Periodontal Therapy

As the "FIRST 100 PROJECT" launches, limiting initial sales to 100 units, the aim is to ensure proper adoption and usage of this innovative therapy in dental clinics across Japan. This initiative not only represents a significant advancement in periodontal treatment but also offers a new model for dental care that could inspire global changes in how oral health is approached and managed.
